Medical School:

HealthAdvocacy's Online Profile

Yilin Zhang is excited to serve as the National Health Advocacy Initiative Co-Chair (alongside Jason Chen). Originally from Jacksonville, FL, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University, where she majored in biology with a biochemistry concentration. She is now a second year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Cultural VP of PittMed's APAMSA chapter and a Regional Director. Since high school, she has worked as an advocate for battered women and under-served populations and has continued to serve these populations in medical school. She runs focus groups at the local battered women's shelter and coordinates PittMed's Health Outreach and Education Project and Operation Safety Net (delivers healthcare to the homeless). Locally, she's partnering with the Organization of Chinese Americans to put on a seminar series that focuses on the Asian Pacific Islander experience with education and healthcare. She sees her national position as an opportunity to "break the silence" surrounding stigmatized issues such as Hep B and domestic violence. The HAI directors will continue to encourage grassroots efforts, but hope to empower medical students to take it one step further - engage their political leaders and fight for the policy changes that can promote widespread change.
