Kathy has been an important advocate for the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. She has served the APA community both locally and nationally in a variety of different capacities, including organizing numerous health fairs, medical education conferences, Hepatitis B campaigns, National Bone Marrow Recruitment campaigns, educational initiatives, media events, study abroad opportunities, and community outreach/charity events.
She is the current National President of the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA), a well known and established organization with a fourteen year history of improving the health and well-being of the APA community. Kathy has been elected to a second presidential term, the only president in the history of the organization to serve two presidential terms. During her tenure as president, she lead a national effort called Hepatitis B, APAMSA Fights to Break the Hepatitis B Cycle, to help raise awareness about Hepatitis B and liver disease in the APA community. This campaign consisted of organizing the first APAMSA national HepB meeting, a groundbreaking event which brought together a national cross section of medical students and physicians dedicated to ending the epidemic of hepatitis B in APA community, and the launching of several local hepatitis B education and screening programs across the United States. In addition, Kathy is nationally recognized for her contributions to the APA community as a member of the Steering Committee of the National Council of Asian Pacific Islander Physicians, an Advisor to the Asian Health Foundation, and an Advisory Board member to HEPB.tv, a new internet TV media campaign board chaired by the honorary HIV researcher, Dr. David Ho.
Kathy recently completed the largest ever national medical education study to examine the effect of race/ethnicity on clinical clerkship grades. Her research is the first national study, currently in press, to examine the role of Asian and Under-represented Minority race/ethnicity on clinical-clerkship grades. Kathy plans to pursue residency training in Internal Medicine or Pediatrics and to continue her work to improve the health of the APA community as an advocate and future practicing medical clinician. |
