"3rd Annual Asian American Health and Cultural Fair"

"2nd Annual Asian American Health and Cultural Fair - Building Communities and Laying Foundations"

The objective of this event is to introduce participants to the various Asian cultural entities contributing to American society, and to educate them about the various different aspects of those cultures. This event serves to foster understanding between individuals of different heritage by demonstrating the traditions that have shaped their lives. It will serve as a forum for discussion of various health and cultural issues that effect Asian ethnic groups and their experiences as Americans. This event fosters cross-cultural understanding, especially as it pertains to health care by introducing and discussing several topics and scenarios one may encounter in providing and receiving health care in the Asian American community. As a service to our community, a free health screening for cholesterol, glaucoma and blood pressure will also be provided. We encourage participation from all interested students and the Ann Arbor community.

Bridging Communities and Laying Foundations
At a time when “diversity” is a frequently used buzzword in medical schools, it is apropos that we devote a day dedicated to a continent that in itself exemplifies diversity.  Asian Americans are an amalgamation of cultures.  This conference strives to give participants an introduction to these cultures in the context of modern healthcare.  Cultural competency is imperative to facing the challenges of the 21st century medical frontier.  This year's theme, “Bridging Communities and Laying Foundations,” reflects the organizers' hope that this event will foster an understanding between individuals of different heritages by demonstrating the traditions that have shaped their lives, and serve as a forum for the discussion of various health and cultural issues that effect Asian ethnic groups and their experiences as Americans.

The health screening for cholesterol, glaucoma and blood pressure will begin at 11 A.M. At 12 P.M., our keynote speaker Dr. B Li, MD (Professor of Pediatrics at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University) will deliver the keynote address, “Self, Culture and Success.” The conference is then divided into 3 blocks, each with a variety of workshops to choose from. The conference will end at 4:30.

April 15-16, 2005 by St. Louis University and Washington University APAMSA

Leadership...Culture...Medicine :  Three inter-related themes that we will explore and reflect on together this spring in St. Louis. We, as Asian Americans and members of the medical community, have the opportunity and responsibility to embrace our cultural identities and to incorporate this greater understanding of who we are into the practice of our medicine…

Leadership : the Will and Drive to take Charge.

Medical students
: learn to become more pro-active and effective in managing the care of patients during clinical years. understand and respond to cultural stereotypes in medicine.
Pre-medical students : understand how to optimize your competitiveness as applicants to medical school.
Political advocacy
: understand the making of policy and the means by which to effect change.

Culture
: the Understanding and Embrace of Who We Are.

Competency : the true ability to heal others from the knowledge of self.
Incorporation
: invest the knowledge of self in clinical practice.

Medicine
: the Art and Science to which we Dedicate ourselves.

Asian Medicine
: the rich heritage of a vast diversity of peoples shaped over thousands of years. learn to embrace and utilize this knowledge in your practice.
Clinical Skills : the growth of our understanding of the human side of medicine. Practice makes perfect….
