Acupuncture Education International

Acupuncture Education International, Inc. is dedicated to promoting the education, clinical application, and research in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine in North America by organizing “Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine Elective” to the World Health Organization designated training center in Beijing, China. This elective is designed to fit into American medical school’s curriculum, yet it is also open to dental students, nursing students, physical therapy students and all other healthcare professionals.

This elective is held in Beijing, China every April and July.  Over 250 U.S. and British medical students have participated in this rotation.  Most 4th-year medical students attend the April rotation, and most 1st-year medical students attend the July rotation.  Both rotations in 2011 are open for applications now.  For 2011 program details, please visit our website.  One of our 4th-year medical students from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons kept a blog during his study in Beijing this past April.  Students who are interested in knowing more about this program can visit his blog a for a vivid, first-hand depiction of his experience with our program.

NGOabroad

NGOabroad is a unique service that provides frugal, customized international volunteer options and helps people enter international humanitarian work.

1. The Sacred Valley, PERU: Work in a local clinic which serves both town and surrounding remote villages. Your responsibilities will depend on your skills. Medical director welcomes experienced doctors of all specialties & medical students. Spanish & Quechua are both helpful. Tutoring in both languages available.

2. Gulu, AFRICA: This region of Uganda was devastated by war as the “Lord’s Resistance Army” kidnapped boys to fight as child soldiers and girls were raped and infected with AIDS. Work in their pediatric clinic to help prevent the transmission of AIDS to infants. Medical students are needed to teach Mother and Child Wellness. Work in their clinic & surrounding community with general population. Director has also asked for help with reproductive education & family planning to reduce the size of large families struggling to feed all the kids. This clinic is unusual by African standards: they have a microscope & some lab equipment. What is needed? People that can work with very few resources.

3. Other sites in AFRICA: There is 1 doctor/10,000 people in most countries in Africa. If you are up for the challenge, we need seasoned health care workers who can tend to medical needs in both urban & rural settings in Africa without the lab or diagnostic tests to which you may be accustomed.

4. Rural areas, ECUADOR & BOLIVIA: One doctor who had worked in a similarly resource poor site in South America said, “It was like I was on a stool out in the middle of nowhere. People came from miles around. I set bones, pulled teeth and anything else that needed to be done. It was the high point of my career.” We have partner organizations in both Ecuador & Bolivia who are requesting medical students & doctors to work with their remote rural populations.

5. HIMALAYAS: We are just beginning to form a partnership with a small organization in the remote Himalayas. Same challenge: providing care with very few resources.

These are volunteer positions. (But we also help people into international careers.) Applications accepted on a rolling basis. No end date.
