Community Outreach Initiative

National APAMSA is committed to addressing health inequities in Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community health, as well as increasing AANHPI representation in healthcare research. As such, community outreach grant funding is available to all APAMSA chapters through our partnership with the Asian Research Coalition and the All of Us Research Program. Outreach activities can include, but are not limited to: health screenings, health fairs, supply donations to community centers, and flu shot clinics. APAMSA is currently partnering with CVS to provide free immunization clinics; fill out this interest form and read below to learn more. Community Outreach Grant

Want to host a project that serves your community members? Apply to APAMSA’s Community Outreach Grant! All chapters are encouraged to apply for funding to support their community service projects, including (but not limited to): health fairs, flu clinics, workshop speakers, supply drives, etc. Funding is also provided for projects with research components. All grant recipients are required to advertise the All of Us Research Program, which funds this grant. Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Scroll down to learn more!

Are you in need of additional funding for your community outreach project, such as a health fair or fitness day? We are currently accepting grant applications! Grants will be reviewed and funds disbursed on a first come first serve basis. 

 

What is the All of Us Research Program and how do I need to include them in my project?

    • Our funding is provided by the NIH’s All of Us Research Program (AoURP), whose mission is to increase diverse representation in research and precision medicine. APAMSA’s role is to promote the AoURP to AANHPI-identifying individuals. To read more about the AoURP please visit www.joinallofus.org/en/asianhealth. It is mandatory to advertise for AoURP at your event. Some ways to promote AoURP include having students with laptops/tablets recruiting participants, having QR codes for people to scan, distributing flyers, etc.

What types of events can be funded by the Community Outreach Grant?

    • Outreach activities can include, but are not limited to: health screenings, health fairs, flu shot clinics, and supply donations to community centers. Please refer to past projects as examples of what we have funded in the past. However, feel free to be innovative with your initiatives! 

What resources can be funded by the Community Outreach Grant?

    • You may request any resources necessary for your activities’ success. These may range from posters, raffle gift cards, food, etc. We encourage applicants to be economical and resourceful wherever possible with their budget to maximize the impact of their funding.

How much money can we be granted?

    • Award amounts typically fund up to $150; however, the amount of funding can be increased on a case-by-case basis depending on the novelty and/or utility of the proposed activity. Please note: this funding will be provided as a reimbursement following your event’s conclusion.

What happens after I’ve submitted the application?

    • Applications are reviewed on a first come first serve basis. Please allow up to 4 weeks for processing of your application. After your application is reviewed by our Community Outreach grant committee, our representatives will contact you via email with your award status, questions, and/or suggestions for your event. 
    • After you have been accepted:
      • You will have up to 1 month after the proposed date of your event to host the actual event.
      • We require that you take photos and/or videos from your event so that it may be featured on our website and/or monthly newsletter.
      • You must fill out a post-event survey no later than 2 weeks after your event date.
      • You must fill out a reimbursement form within 1 month of your event to receive funding.

How often can chapters apply for funding?

    • There is no limit to how often chapters may apply for funding, as long as the request pertains to the requirements and goals of the Community Outreach Grant.
    • Chapters typically are accepted for this grant once per academic year until all funding has been granted. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If my project involves research (e.g. conducting interviews, recruiting study participants), can it still be funded?

    • Yes, the Community Outreach Grant application includes a Research Outreach component. All grant applications involving research must include a research protocol, IRB number, and a description of the project methods and goals. Does our project have to be directed towards exclusively AANHPI communities?

    • While we support health outreach for all people regardless of background, we prioritize health programming directed towards uplifting AANHPI community members. The ideal event should have clear outreach and/or educational goals pertaining to the AANHPI community. However, all applications are considered on a case-by-case basis, so please feel free to reach out to outreach@apamsa.org if you have any questions!

National APAMSA is excited to offer a new opportunity in partnership with CVS as we approach peak flu vaccination season! Local chapters will be able to set up free clinics where CVS will send out licensed immunizers to provide vaccinations to the community. 

Requirements: At least 20 participants and a CVS located within 30 miles of your chosen clinic location

Basic details:

  • Your chapter provides a location (community center, church, medical school, etc.) and selects a date and time at least 28 days in advance.
  • CVS will send personnel to administer vaccinations (flu, Covid, and more!).
  • The clinic is free for your chapter. Vaccinations are also free for participants whose insurance plan covers care at CVS since they will be billed individually. CVS accepts most insurances.

Anyone can receive vaccinations, whether it be medical students or community members. This is not only a great opportunity for outreach, but also a convenient solution if your institution requires annual flu vaccines.

  • Students at the Medical College of Wisconsin filmed an educational TV segment about nasopharyngeal cancer in 2021 that was broadcast on WMLW-TV’s monthly Nyob Zoo Milwaukee TV, a local program targeting the Hmong population in Wisconsin.
