We are excited to announce the return of the National APAMSA Bootcamp Series for 2024, featuring six specialties (Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Surgery). Alumni residents, fellows, and attendings will provide a rapid review of core topics and offer practical tips for medical students preparing for their sub-internship or intern year.

Advancing Asian-American Health Through Qualitative Research

We are happy to announce that the 17th Annual Hepatitis B/C Conference will be taking place in-person on Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST at our updated venue: The NonProfit Center, 89 South Street, Suite 302, Boston, MA 02111-2680!

We are also ecstatic to announce that the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine APAMSA Chapter will be collaborating to host this conference! APAMSA members and non-members are all welcome to register and attend.

WELCOME TO THE 17TH ANNUAL APAMSA HEPATITIS CONFERENCE!

Each year, we strive to collectively engage in the global fight against liver diseases, including hepatitis B and C, and to raise awareness about health disparities and their impact within the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) population. We are excited to welcome you all in person in Boston, MA on 11/11/2023! Our members at Boston University have graciously partnered with us to put together the best conference yet!

The objectives of the conference are to raise awareness about the impact of liver diseases on the AANHPI community, to encourage future health care providers to advocate for policy changes to address the current health disparities that the AANHPI community face, to provide opportunities for current health profession students to network with prominent leaders in hepatology and to provide a venue for students to present their research on topics related to GI/hepatology.

Su Wang, MD, MPH, FACP

Medical Director of Viral Hepatitis Programs and the Center for Asian Health at the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center

Su Wang, MD, MPH, FACP is the Medical Director of Viral Hepatitis Programs and the Center for Asian Health at the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, part of the RWJBarnabas Health System in New Jersey.

Dr. Wang is a practicing internist and has served as principal investigator for a number of viral hepatitis screening and linkage-to-care grants sponsored by the US CDC and other funders. She has led primary care-based hepatitis B and C programs, community screening and outreach efforts, patient and community-based advocacy, and community based research initiatives.

She serves as Senior Advisor for Global Health for the Hepatitis B Foundation. She was also Past President of the World Hepatitis Alliance She has served on a number of WHO guideline development committees.

She received her Medical Degree from the University of Miami and her Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Dr. Wang completed a combined Internal Medicine and Pediatric residency at Georgetown University Hospital and then served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She was previously the Director of Hepatitis Programs at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center in New York City.

Ponni Perumalswami, MD, MSCR


Associate Professor of Gastroenterology & Hepatology

Dr. Perumalswami examines strategies to improve health services and access to care for patients with liver disease. She graduated from University of Michigan and received her M.S. in clinical research at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Perumalswami received her M.D. degree from Wayne State University. Her research focuses on the development of clinical and behavioral health care models to identify and address system-level barriers to liver care within underserved and vulnerable communities. In 2020, Perumalswami joined the steering committee of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ Hepatitis C Virus Elimination Plan, which informs policy and practice to mitigate the spread of viral hepatitis. She also works with the Michigan Opioid Collaborative on outreach and training initiatives aimed at increasing hepatitis C screening and treatment by primary care providers in rural areas of the state.

Anna Suk-Fong Lok, MD

Dame Sheila Sherlock Distinguished University Professor of Hepatology and Internal Medicine

Dr. Anna Lok graduated from University of Hong Kong Medical School. She completed her medicine training at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong and hepatology training in London. She was a faculty at the University of Hong Kong until she moved to the US in 1992. She joined the University of Michigan in 1995 as Director of the Hepatology Program. She became Associate Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Internal Medicine in 2008 and Assistant Dean for Clinical Research in 2016.

Dr. Lok’s research focuses on natural history and treatment of hepatitis B and C. She has published more than 600 papers on viral hepatitis and liver diseases, including five iterations of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) guidelines on “Hepatitis B”. She also participated in the development of the first World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on hepatitis B and C. She was one of the top 1% most cited researchers in the world for the period 2002-2012. Dr. Lok served as Associate Editor of Hepatology in 2002-2006, Senior Associate Editor of Gastroenterology in 2011-2012, and President of AASLD in 2017. She has mentored many fellows and faculty and was recognized with an American Gastroenterological Association Distinguished Mentor Award. She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2022

Jason T. Blackard, PhD

Professor, University of Cincinnati

Dr. Blackard received his PhD in Biological Sciences in Public Health at Harvard University in Boston, MA (2000).  He completed a post-doctoral fellowship (2002-2005) at Massachusetts General Hospital where he investigated the interactions of flaviviruses with the human immunodeficiency virus

Dr. Blackard directs a translational research laboratory focusing on human and mechanistic studies to understand virus-virus and virus-host interactions. Current work involves studies of hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), human pegivirus (HPgV), HIV, and BK polyomavirus.

The poster session is tentatively scheduled for 12 PM to 2 PM. At least one author is required to give a presentation during this time. Poster awards will be given by our judges.

HOUSING INFORMATION:

Discounted housing provided by the Boston Downtown Marriott is available on Friday, November 10th, 2023 on a first come, first serve basis. Deadline to sign up is October 28, 2023 at 11:59PM. This is a shared room with max occupancy of 4 per room. The price is $50/person. We will assign rooms to the best of our ability based on gender identity and housing preferences. If you would like to also stay Saturday in the hotel room, we have discussed this with the staff and will be able to lock in a price for you to book. LEAD with APAMSA - Building an Organization from Scratch with Dr. Jhemon Lee

Join Dr. Jhemon Lee, one of the founders of APAMSA, as he discusses the importance of leadership in the context of organizational development. Dr. Lee is a private practice radiologist in Los Alamitos, CA. He was one of the original student organizers that helped lead to the formation of APAMSA in 1995, and has helped lead APAMSA’s Advisory Board ever since. He is a board member of the National Council of Asian Pacific Islander Physicians (NCAPIP). He is president of the Orange County chapter of OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, and has previously been involved with the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP), serving in many roles including National President, President of its Chicago chapter, and co-chair of the 2008 National Convention.  He is also the Medical Advisor for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography programs at Platt College. Dr. Lee received his bachelor’s degree in Engineering Sciences at Harvard University and obtained his medical degree from the University of Maryland. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Chicago, where he was chief resident, and a fellowship in abdominal imaging at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston. On the side, he and his wife, Misa performed improv comedy for years with groups such as Cold Tofu, Los Angeles’ longest running API improv troupe. More recently, Jhemon has been writing and performing sketch comedy with a local API comedy group, “No MSG Added.”

Dr. Martina Leialoha Kamaka is a board certified Native Hawaiian Family Physician and Associate Professor in the Department of Native Hawaiian Health at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa, John A. Burns School of Medicine.  She is a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools, the University of Notre Dame and the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). She completed her Family Medicine residency in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Dr. Kamaka was in private practice in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Kailua, Hawaii before joining the medical school faculty in 1999.   Her passion for understanding the role of culture in medical care and wellness began during her residency training but it was as a faculty member at JABSOM that she was able to pursue that passion fully and help to formalize cultural competency training for medical students.  Her passion for indigenous health has led her to current leadership positions.  She is a Vice Chair of NCAPIP (the National Council of Asian Pacific Islander Physicians), commissioner for the AAFP DEI-FM commission as well as founder, past President/Chair and board member of both the ʻAhahui o nā Kauka (Association of Native Hawaiian Physicians) and the Pacific Region Indigenous Doctors Congress (PRIDoC).

Dr. Joyce Park is a board-certified dermatologist based in Washington, founder and CEO of Skin Refinery, a virtual dermatology clinic, and a skincare and beauty content creator at Tea with MD. She attended college and medical school at Stanford University, and completed her dermatology residency at NYU. During medical school, she completed the Stanford-NBC News Global Health Media Fellowship, working in the communications office of the World Health Organization in Switzerland and as part of the medical unit at NBC News. She realized the power of traditional and social media for public health education during this year, and she continued exploring this potential as a fellow interning at the ABC News Medical Unit.  Dr. Park created Tea With MD and its associated social media channels (Instagram, Tiktok, YouTube, and more) as a resource for science-based skincare from a dermatologist’s perspective. She strives to educate and entertain her audience of over 680k followers worldwide with a range of topics including scientific research on skincare and dermatology conditions, reviews of beauty trends, and sharing behind the scenes of life as a physician Mom. She is a skincare media expert and has been featured in has been featured in Forbes, Good Morning America, Allure, Cosmopolitan, Vogue, Huffington Post, Time, Marie Claire, the Gloss Angeles Podcast, and more. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring the beautiful Pacific Northwest with her husband and toddler son, taking hip-hop dance lessons, and mentoring the next generation of students interested in medicine and dermatology.

Dr. Joy Wu is Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Gerontology and Metabolism and Vice Chair of Basic and Translational Science in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She earned her MD and PhD degrees from Duke University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and clinical fellowship in Endocrinology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Wu directs a basic and translational research program that focuses on skeletal development, the bone marrow hematopoietic and metastatic niche, and stem cell therapies for bone. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Mary Kay Foundation and the Department of Defense. Dr. Wu has served on clinical guideline committees for the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Endocrine Society, and the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy. She has been awarded the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award and the Stanford University Faculty Women’s Forum Allyship Award. Dr. Wu has served on the Board of Directors for the Endocrine Society and she is currently a member of the Council of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research

Judy Tung, MD is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. She is a primary care general internist and is the Chief of the Section of Adult Internal Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine. She is also the Associate Dean for Faculty Development and directs a college-wide faculty development course called the Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (LAMP).

Lindy Zhang, MD is currently a pediatric hematology/oncology clinical and research fellow at the Johns Hopkins Hospital/National Institutes of Health combined program and a Ph.D. candidate in the Cellular and Molecular Medicine program at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She completed her Bachelor of Science in biochemistry at the University of Michigan and her medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is a child of Chinese immigrants and the first in her family to pursue a post-bachelor’s degree. She is passionate about diversity and inclusion and conducts research focused on increaseing Asian American representation in academic medicine. She is a member of the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) Alumni Advisory Board and is invested in mentorship, promoting scholarship among Asian American medical students, and increasing their diversity within academic.

Nolan Kagetsu, MD studied chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduating from Albany Medical College (before the creation of APAMSA !), he completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Mount Sinai West and a fellowship in Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology at NYU. He currently is a diagnostic neuroradiologist at Mount Sinai in New York City.Nolan serves on the APAMSA alumni advisory board, the American College of Radiology Commission for Women and Diversity, and the Advisory Committee to the ACGME office of Diversity.He has written about unconscious bias, microaggression, and being an upstander. He is a Professor of Radiology and Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He has 2 adult children and lives with his wife in New York City. Dr. Herbert Chen obtained his BS from Stanford University with Honors and with Distinction in 1988 and graduated from Duke University School of Medicine Alpha Omega Alpha in 1992.  Dr. Chen then completed a general surgery residency followed by a surgical oncology and endocrinology fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.  Dr. Chen is Chair of the Department of Surgery at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and the Surgeon-in-Chief of UAB Hospital and Health System.  He is a Professor of Surgery, Pediatrics, and Biomedical Engineering, and holds the Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair.  His clinical interests include endocrine surgery and he is a pioneer in radioguided parathyroid surgery.  Dr. Chen’s lab has been continuously funded for over 21 years and studies the role of Notch signaling in thyroid and neuroendocrine cancers.  He is the American Cancer Society MEN2 Thyroid Cancer Professor.  Dr. Chen is the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Surgery.  He has held several leadership positions in major academic societies including President of the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons Foundation, President of Association for Academic Surgery, President of the Society of Clinical Surgery, President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, and President of Surgical Biology Club II.  Dr. Chen has mentored over 130 faculty, post-doctoral fellows, residents, medical students, and undergraduates in his lab.  He has published over 620 original research and review articles and has edited 28 textbooks.  He is well-known for his passion for teaching and mentoring the next generation of surgical leaders.  Dr. Chen has also been recognized as a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dr. Chen and his wife Harriet, a freelance photographer, reside in Mountain Brook, AL.  His son Alex is medical student at Yale University while his daughter Liz is a graduate student in Graphic Design at NC State.
