1 Month Left: BTM x APAMSA Interchapter Competition Ends September 1st
Hi APAMSA,
We are in the final month of the Be The Match x APAMSA Interchapter Competition! The competition will be coming to an end on September 1st, at which point registrations will close. However, registrants can continue returning their kits for up to a month before we officially decide our winner. As a reminder, the top 14 schools with the highest number of registrants will receive a Visa Gift Card as a prize. It’s not too late to boost your numbers or get your chapter in the running, so see below for things you can do!
1. Host a Bone Marrow Drive to kick off the start of the school year and register incoming M1s! Reach out to your Be The Match representative to get started and apply for the Bone Marrow Grant ($150) for additional funding.
2. Join the Summer Swab Your Circle Campaign by requesting a swab kit and start swabbing your friends/family. It’s an easy way to get more individuals registered for the National Bone Marrow Registry. Don’t forget to mention your APAMSA chapter when requesting your kit!
3. Continue reaching out and reminding registrants to return their kits!

Response to the Overturning of Roe v. Wade
Following their leaked draft opinion on May 2nd indicating that they would be voting to overturn Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court officially overruled the landmark decision to protect the right to abortion on June 24th, 2022. Individual states will now have the authority to determine whether to permit or to ban abortions within their borders. We at National APAMSA stand firm in our previous statement that we published in response to the leaked draft opinion: Whether patients have access to abortion services should not depend on where they happen to live, but rather must be protected and upheld at the national level. Reproductive rights are impacted by racial and economic injustices, such that minority women, including those in the AANHPI community, are particularly burdened by impediments to reproductive health services. We lament with those who fear for their loss of healthcare access, and we call all other healthcare organizations to join us in denouncing this decision. We urge the policymakers in each individual state to fight for continued abortion services, just as we urge the Supreme Court Justices to reconsider their decision. APAMSA will continue to fight for our AANHPI communities and advocate for equality and social justice for all women.

Håfa adai! My name is Michelle, and I am a third-year medical student at Oregon Health and Science University. I was born and raised on the island of Guam in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I moved to California for college and graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Kinesiology. I hope to help engage and connect our AANHPI community as one of the 2023 National Conference directors. Outside of school, I love spoiling my dog and online shopping! Hey APAMSA! I’m Hannah Moon and I’m a second-year medical student at OHSU. I’m a child of Korean immigrants, grew up in Portland and went to undergrad at WashU in St. Louis, majoring in Neuroscience. I served as co-president for OHSU APAMSA 2020-2021 where Joyce and I focused on expanding and strengthening the Asian American community within OHSU (particularly in a pandemic virtual environment) and bridging the different diversity student groups and communities. Outside of school, I enjoy running, collecting food recommendations, learning languages, and fostering kittens!
